The AIoT for ICT4D Research Cluster is a multidisciplinary research and innovation platform based at the Namibia University of Science and Technology. We bring together researchers, postgraduate students, innovation champions, industry partners, government agencies and development actors to advance applied research at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things and emerging technologies.
Our work focuses on practical, Africa-centred solutions that address real development priorities, including smart water systems, food security, digital governance, citizen safety, health innovation, secure communication and resilient digital infrastructure. Through projects such as Innovate4Water, Lacuna Fund AI for Plant Disease Detection, Smart Parking, Making Windhoek Safer, HASH and ACEWATER III, we translate research into prototypes, policy insight, postgraduate capacity and measurable societal value.




AI for Agriculture and Food Systems
Research on mobile-based plant pest and disease identification helped shape the cluster’s applied AI work in agriculture, including later AI-supported plant disease detection for Pearl Millet and Maize. The publication record includes work by Sibanda, Iyawa and Gamundani on plant pest and disease identification strategies in mobile applications.
Smart City and IoT Innovation
The cluster’s smart infrastructure work expanded through the conceptual design of a sensorless smart parking payment solution, contributing to applied IoT innovation for urban services and smart city development.
AI for Health and Secure Digital Systems
Cluster-linked research advanced machine learning applications in health risk prediction, IoT security, crime prediction and digital trust, strengthening the connection between AI research and real societal challenges. The submission lists 2024 work on diabetes prediction in PCOS patients, IoT smart office data security threats, forged academic qualification detection and crime prediction in Windhoek.
Water Security and Resource Resilience
Research expanded into non-revenue water, IoT-based leak detection and green hydrogen systems, supporting Namibia’s water, energy and resource-security priorities. Recent work includes IoT-based leak detection systems for non-revenue water reduction in Namibia.
Formalising the AIoT for ICT4D Research Cluster
NUST moved to formalise the AIoT for ICT4D Research Cluster as a recognised multidisciplinary platform for research excellence, innovation outputs, postgraduate development, external funding, industry collaboration and societal impact.
IndabaX Namibia Growth
IndabaX Namibia strengthens the cluster’s capacity-building and community engagement agenda by providing a national platform for students, researchers, innovators and industry stakeholders to engage with Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies. In 2026, it continues to support the AIoT for ICT4D mission by showcasing student talent, encouraging applied research, strengthening partnerships and promoting locally relevant AI-driven solutions for Namibia and the wider African context.
